Our top priority is the health and well-being of our students and all members of our campus community. The following information is to help inform our campus about measles to ensure everyone stays healthy and informed.

Measles is a highly contagious and potentially serious illness, but it is almost entirely preventable with the MMR (measles, mumps and rubella) vaccine. While there are currently no reported cases at the University of Kentucky, we are encouraging all students to check their vaccination status to protect themselves and our campus community.

What to do if exposed to measles:

If you (UK students or employees) have symptoms or believe you may have been exposed to measles, you should call University Health Service at 859-323-4636 and a provider will assess your symptoms. It's important to call ahead before coming in so that proper precautions can be taken to help prevent the spread of infection once you arrive.

Who is at risk?

The highest risk is for individuals who are unvaccinated or have compromised immune systems. Travel, especially international travel or visits to areas experiencing outbreaks, can also increase the risk of exposure. Since you and many UK students and employees may have traveled over Spring Break, now is a good time to check your vaccination status.

Measles Signs and Symptoms

Measles symptoms can appear 7–14 days after exposure and may include:

  • Fever
  • Cough
  • Runny nose
  • Red eyes
  • A rash that starts at the head and spreads downward
HOW TO STAY PROTECTED

The MMR vaccine is the best way to prevent measles. In the U.S., two doses of the vaccine have been standard for children since 1989. If you are unsure of your vaccination status, here’s what you can do:

Check your records.

Your may need help from your parents or doctor to review any past immunization records.

Get a titer test.

University Health Service or your primary care physician can check for measles immunity using a titer test.

Get vaccinated if needed.

If you have not had both doses, vaccinations are available at:
