From Bus Driver to Life Designer Sally Cummings Foster’s Journey of Empowering Students at the University of Kentucky

As a child, Sally Cummings Foster had a dream that might surprise you: she wanted to be a bus driver. But it wasn’t the bus itself that captured her heart—it was the driver of the bus she rode, Penny. Every morning and afternoon, Penny greeted the children with warmth, kindness and care. She wasn’t just driving the bus; she was helping each child navigate their journey with a listening ear and a safe, welcoming presence. To young Sally, Penny was a guide, a mentor and a protector.

Today, Sally’s role at the University of Kentucky mirrors that childhood vision. As the Assistant Dean for Student Engagement at the Lewis Honors College, Director of the Center for Personal Development, and Honors Instructor, Sally is a modern-day “bus driver”—guiding students through one of the most pivotal journeys of their lives: college.

“My job is like being a bus driver. I may not be behind the wheel, but I’m here to help students find their way from point A to point B,” says Sally, reflecting on the guiding role she plays in the lives of UK students. Whether it’s navigating the anxieties of freshman year or preparing for the transition from college to career, Sally is the steady presence that students can rely on as they chart their own course.

At UK, Sally has made a name for herself as an expert in career counseling, helping students design their futures with intention and creativity. She’s built innovative programs like the Center for Personal Development, where students not only receive career coaching but also engage in leadership development, well-being initiatives and personalized support.

One of Sally’s most significant contributions has been her work with the Lewis Honors College, where she oversees student engagement initiatives designed to empower Honors students to think creatively about their futures. Using the “life design” approach to career counseling, she partners with students to build flexible, customized paths forward—whether they’re pursuing graduate school, launching a career or exploring other opportunities.

“Seeing a student grow from feeling uncertain to becoming confident and clear about their path is incredibly rewarding,” Sally shares. “It’s like watching them put together a puzzle, piece by piece. When they realize their potential, that’s when I know the work I’m doing has made a real difference.”

Sally’s journey at UK has been a story of growth and innovation. In her 18 years at the university, she’s held pivotal roles, including founding the Graham Office of Career Management at the Gatton College of Business and Economics. Her drive to build and innovate led her to establish the Center for Personal Development, which is now transforming the way UK supports its students’ personal and professional growth.

The most gratifying part of her job, Sally says, is the opportunity to see students’ dreams evolve and take shape. “I get to be part of their transformation—from the moment they feel uncertain to the moment they discover their passion and potential. And I’m proud to watch them thrive.”

For Sally Cummings Foster, the journey is never over. It’s an ongoing process of guiding, supporting and inspiring students as they design the lives they’ve always dreamed of. And for her, the road to success always begins with one simple but powerful question: Where do you want to go today?
