It all started with a persuasive speech Trey Cline overheard in a sophomore public speaking class at the University of Kentucky. His classmate persuaded the class to look into the realm of speech pathology and communication disorders, and that’s exactly what Trey did.

After years studying as an undergraduate and graduate student, Trey now has a Doctorate of Audiology, a Bachelor of Health Sciences in Communication Disorders and has been working in his chosen field for almost 14 years now.

Trey accredits the discovery of his passion all the way back to that spark ignited during his sophomore year. After hearing about speech pathology, he felt guided to take his first communication disorders class and begin down the path of audiology.

In these classes Trey learned about the different paths he could take in the realm of communication disorders. “How the brain processes and handles sound…  I became fascinated with that aspect of it, how the brain works from a hearing standpoint,” Trey said.

Now as a clinical audiologist for UK Healthcare, where he’s worked since 2013, Trey finds himself treating patients from birth to across the human lifespan. In his work he encounters a wide variety of patients in need of different arrays of treatments or diagnostic testing, like newborn babies who require hearing tests.

“I can go to the hospital and see a baby that’s a day old, and then I might come back here and see someone who’s 102 years old for hearing aids,” Trey said. “The beauty of being here, or in a place like this, is that you can see adults and you can see kids.”

From his first experience at UK as a young adult out on his own for the first time, to now as a full-time UK Healthcare provider with a doctorate in AuD, even actively studying a PhD in gerontology, he regards it as an interesting journey. This academic and career trajectory is one he says he never would have predicted for himself.

The university supports and encourages its employees in career and educational growth in a way that Trey notes is “unheard of.” Growth mechanisms are available to help employees pursue and discover trajectories or career paths they elsewhere might not have access to, like the employee tuition reimbursement program.

While Trey is empowered by the university to further his education and career, he also feels encouraged by the team of providers in his department that he works with, daily. His department’s unique team-centered approach at UK Healthcare inspires and motivates Trey, which he says makes for better patient care, supports individual growth and fosters a positive team atmosphere.

“We all genuinely like each other, get along and are friends with each other… And we all happen to be good at our jobs,” Trey said.

TOGETHER, WE WILL REDEFINE WHAT'S POSSIBLE.
